Chandra ( The Moon ) – Thingaloor History

Chandra is a lunar god. True to say that the Moon is lord of plants and vegetation. Chandra is credit with young, energetic, beautiful, 2 armed and having lotus in hands. With the support of ten white horses, he rides his chariot across the sky by every night. He is also called as

 Rajanipati, meaning lord of the night.

 Kshupakara, meaning one who illuminates the night.

According to the Hindu Astronomy, he presides over Monday. He is married to27 Nakshatras. Three types of incidents are told as the history. Let see one by one.

Lord Vishnu distributed the Amurtham among devas. One of the asuras disguised as deva tasted the Amurtham distributed by the Lord. Suryan and chandran complained this to the Lord when came about this news. Angered and worried, the Lord used the weapon called chakrayudham(discus) to cut the asura’s body into two. The head region joined with body of snake and become Raghu Bhagavan. The body portion joined with snake’s head become Kethu bhagavan. Ragu and Kethu bhagavan doesn’t forgive the suryan and chandran. Chandran is started consuming by Ragu. This leads chanran to rely on the Lord Shiva for blessings. Lord Shiva has blessed the chandran to get back the power of growing back after 15 days. So, we can see the waxing and waning of the Chandra (Moon) in the sky. The Lord also blessed the Moon and adorning him in his head. Anyone prays the Moon has belief of regain the power and enjoyment in life.

King Dakshan gave all the 27 daughters to chandran in marriage. Among the 27, Chandra’s favourite consort is Rohini. This leads the Chandra to spend more time with the rohini. Other ones made a complaint to their father. King Dakshan got angry and cursed Chandra that the beauty and awesomeness slowly disappears by every day. Chandra is to be relied on Lord Shiva to escape from the curse. Lord Shiva blesses him to regain the awesomeness day by day. This led waxing and waning of Moon. Shiva also adorns the Chandra in his forehead.

Apputhi Adigal, follower of Thirunavukarasar, served poor and done many charitable works in the name of his mentor. Adigal asked Thirunavukarasar to have a lunch in his house. Thirunavukarasar accepted the offer and made a visit. On the day of visit, Adigal’s son died. On hearing the death news, adigal simply said ‘Aththi devo bhava’ and continue to serve the mentor by hiding his sorrow. On hearing the truth, Thirunavukarasar went to this Kailasanathar temple with the dead body. He asked the Lord to shower the blessings on the adigal’s son. As a result, adigal’s son came back to the normal life.
